SAN FRANCISCO—Market research firm IC Insights Inc. lowered its forecast for semiconductor industry growth in 2011, citing a weak global economy.

IC Insights (Scottsdale, Ariz.) said it now projects that global semiconductor revenue will increase 5 percent this year, down from an earlier forecast calling for 10 percent growth. The firm also lowered its projection for 2011 integrated circuit (IC) growth to 4 percent from 10 percent.

In a mid-year update to the firm's McClean Report, IC Insights maintains that a series of economic setbacks—including the March 11 earthquake in Japan, the Arab Spring political uprising in the Middle East, a surge in natural disasters in the U.S. and government debt concerns in the U.S. and Europe—caused quarterly worldwide economic growth to slow significantly in the first half of 2011 as compared to 2010 and in turn served to slow worldwide electronics and semiconductor industry market growth.

"While any of these negative events by themselves may not have had a serious impact, combined, they served to noticeably slow the worldwide economy in the first half of this year," said Bill McClean, president of IC Insights, in a research bulletin.

Worldwide GDP figures have been on fairly steep decline since reaching 4.6 percent in 2010, IC Insights said. The second quarter GDP estimate of 3.1 percent is 33 percent lower than it was in the second quarter of 2010 and less than 1 percent over the 2.5 percent global recession mark, IC Insights said.

IC Insights said it expects worldwide GDP growth to be better in the second half of the year than it was in the second half due to post-earthquake investment by Japan and a stronger economy in the U.S.

Also in the mid-year update to the McClean report, IC Insights updated its list of the top 20 semiconductor supplier by revenue in the first half of 2011. Intel Corp. extended its lead over No. 2 chip supplier Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., registering 43 percent better sales than Samsung in the first half of the year, IC Insights said.

In total, the top 20 semiconductor suppliers showedan 8 percent increase in first half sales compared to the first half of2010, IC Insights said. This growth rate was 4 points better than totalworldwide semiconductor industry growth of 4 percent in the first halfof the year compared to 2010, IC Insights said.

Nvidia Corp. returned to the top 20—supplanting Panasonic Corp.—despite a first half sales increase of only 1 percent compared to 2010, IC Insights said.

First opal-like crystals discovered in meteorite

Katsuo Tsukamoto and colleagues say that colloidal crystals such as opals, which form as an orderly array of particles, are of great interest to for their potential use in new electronics and optical devices. Surprisingly, the crystals in the meteorite are composed of magnetite, which scientists thought could not assemble into such a crystal because magnetic attractions might pack the atoms together too tightly. "We believe that, if synthesized, magnetite colloidal crystals have promising potential as a novel functional material," the article notes.

The formation of colloidal crystals in the meteorite implies that several conditions must have existed when they formed. "First, a certain amount of solution water must have been present in the meteorite to disperse the colloidal particles," the report explains. "The solution water must have been confined in small voids, in which colloidal crystallization takes place. These conditions, along with evidence from similar meteorites, suggest that the crystals may have formed 4.6 billion years ago."

The authors acknowledge funding from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Tohoku University Global COE Program, and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research Tohoku University.

SAN FRANCISCO—Chip makers ON Semiconductor Corp. and Atmel Corp. reported second quarter sales and profits that beat Wall Street's expectations, but offered third quarter sales targets that came up short of projections, according to Craig Berger, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets.

ON Semi (Phoenix) reported record second quarter sales of $905.8 million, up 4 percent compared to the first quarter and up 55 percent compared to the second quarter of 2010. The company posted a net income in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) of $41 million, or 9 cents per diluted share, down from GAAP net incomes of $82.6 million in the previous quarter and $78.7 million in the year-ago quarter.

Second quarter GAAP net income included net charges of $73.4 million, or 16 cents per fully diluted share, from special items. These special items included charges associated with expenses from damaged fabs in the wake of the March 11 earthquake in Japan, ON Semi said.

On a non-GAAP basis, excluding charges, ON Semi reported a net income of $114.4 million, or 26 cents per share, down from a non-GAAP net income of $121.2 million, or 27 cents per share, in the previous quarter.

Consensus analysts' expectations called for ON Semi to report second quarter sales of $878.5 million, with non-GAAP earnings per share of 26 cents, according to Yahoo Finance.

Second quarter gross profit and net income were slightly less than anticipated because of the impact of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan and manufacturing cost increases from commodity prices and foreign currencies, ON Semi said.

In a conference call with analysts following the second quarter report, Keith Jackson, ON Semi's president and CEO, said that, thanks to the effort and teamwork of employees, all of the firm's fabs in Japan—including those that the company acquired when it bought Sanyo Semiconductor Co. Ltd. earlier this year—were capable of full production by the second half of May.

"Semiconductor manufacturing cycle times, however, have a lag between when the factories can begin full production and when those final products can be shipped to customers," Jackson said. "While we anticipate modest sequential growth for Sanyo Semiconductor, it will still be lower than normal seasonality, in part, due to this lost production."

ON Semi said it expects third quarter sales to be between $895 million and $925 million, largely in line with consensus analysts' expectations, which pegged third quarter sales at $913 million, according to Yahoo Finance.

Berger said ON Semi's third quarter guidance was slightly below Wall Street estimates, though generally better than some feared it would be, suggesting that the firm is taking a "breather" from lofty growth, but that business is not falling off a cliff.

But Berger said ON Semi's second quarter gross marging—35.2 percent—was disappointing, with the impact of the March 11 earthquake larger than expected. Forecasted third quarter gross margin of 34 to 35 percent was also a disappointment, Berger said. He said FBR analysts believe that increasing production from the former Sanyo fabs and a coming end of internal inventory depletions signal that some bad news is factored into ON Semi's gross margin guidance, suggesting that it can improve in 2012.

Jackson said the company anticipates that earnings from Sanyo will improve from second quarter levels in the second half of the year.

Berger maintained FBR's "outperform" rating on ON Semi's stock, but cut his estimates for the firm's 2011 pro forma earnings per share to $1.08 from $1.20 and reduced FBR's price target for ON Semi's stock to $14 from $17.

ON Semi's stock traded at $7.80 in afternoon trading Thursday, down 9 percent from Wednesday's close.

Fossils of forest rodents found in highland desert

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2011) — Two new rodent fossils were discovered in the arid highlands of southern Bolivia by researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Universidad Autónoma Tomás Frías.

The larger of the two rodents, named Mesoprocta hypsodus, probably looked something like a guinea pig on stilts, said Darin Croft, an anatomy professor at Case Western Reserve. The smaller, Quebradahondomys potosiensis, was a spiny rat.

An online article in the Journal of Mammalian Evolution describes the new species, a possible third, and two known species that are new inhabitants to that location.

"The two new species are pretty rare," said Croft. Various teams have been working the Bolivian site, called Quebrada Honda, on and off since the late 1970s. Croft's team has been working there for the past five years and has identified only one fossilized piece of jawbone from each animal.

Croft has been working this remote area, about 12,000 feet above sea level, as well as largely understudied areas in the mountains of northern and central Chile, for 14 years. The research sites are among the highest in the Western Hemisphere.

He and his colleagues have found and documented remains of more than two-dozen new species of mammals, ranging from mouse-sized marsupials to giant armadillos and hoofed, sheep-sized grazers in that time.

Prior research using radiometric and paleomagnetic dating techniques puts the age of the fossils at Quebrada Honda in the range of 12.5 to 13 million years ago.

Though the finds were limited to one fossil each, the teeth provide the telltale features needed to determine their kin and identify them as unique.

Mesoprocta hypsodus is related to agoutis and acouchis, two types of current and common rodents found from Costa Rica to Brazil. Tall, complex teeth are typical of these rodents, which are known for their flatish face, long legs and quickness.

Based on the dimensions of the jawbone and teeth, Croft estimates the extinct rodent was about 18 to 20 inches long, 8 inches to a foot at the shoulder and weighed 8 to 10 pounds.

Croft said that although it probably ate fruits and nuts and spent much of its time foraging among the trees, like its modern relatives, its durable teeth indicate that it may also have ventured into more open areas. Forested habitats no longer exist in the Quebrada Honda area.

Quebradahondomys potosiensis is a rat-sized relative of extant spiny rats, which are mostly tree-dwelling relatives of guinea pigs and chinchillas that have spiny coats and tails that easily break off to help them escape from predators. Currently, spiny rats are found throughout Central America and most of South America.

The molar teeth, which are shaped like a "3" or an "E," are typical of a particular subgroup of spiny rats and indicate the extinct rodent fed on a leafy diet. The researchers say it was at least partially arboreal and may have been living in the same trees among which Mesoprocta hypsodus foraged on the ground.

In addition to the two new species above, Croft's group found a number of fossils from the genus Acarechimys.

The remains indicate the animal was about hamster-sized, lived in rocky or bushy environs and fed on leaves and seeds.

Fossils from the genus have been found from Colombia to the southern tip of Argentina, but close analysis is needed to break them down into species. The researchers hope to work with others to define species found.

The most common fossils at the site are from relatives of chinchillas, all of the genus Prolagostomus. They were found in such high numbers that the researchers believe the animals were highly social and, like some of their current relatives, lived in communities much as prairie dogs do today.

Again, closer analysis of known fossils from here and other locations is needed to determine species. Studies of variation in modern relatives will also aid these studies.

Lastly, the investigators found fossils of Guiomys unica, a relative of the guinea pig. The species, estimated to be about the size of a large rabbit but proportioned like a cat, was previously found only in the Patagonia region of Argentina, well over 1,000 miles away.

The animal was likely a grass and leaf eater that frequented both open and more sheltered habitats, the researchers said.

The group is continuing to analyze other fossils it has found in this and other Bolivian sites. They plan to return to the field next year to continue searching for fossils and a clearer picture of the past.

"We're a step closer to pulling the whole fauna together," Croft said. "I fully expect we'll get some more new stuff in the next few years."

The research is funded by the National Geographic Society and the National Science Foundation.

Imperial College, Nexeon, silicon, anode, semiconductor, battery Battery anode startup raises $65 million

LONDON — Nexeon Ltd. (Abingdon, England), a company formed in 2005 to commercialize battery research conducted at Imperial College in London, has received an investment of £40 million (about $65 million) to help it pioneer the use of silicon anodes in place of carbon anodes in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries.

The Series C investment in the company was led by Imperial Innovations Group and included Invesco Perpetual; both are existing investors in the company.

Nexeon, which was looking at in intellectual property licensing business model, said it would use the money to establish a manufacturing facility that would be capable of producing around 250 tonnes of silicon anode material per year. The company did not state where the manufacturing plant would be located, how soon it could be up and running or how many people would work there.

Use of silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries produces higher energy density can offer longer time between charges, or a smaller size battery and less weight for the same charge and performance, the company said.

The latest funding brings the total raised by Nexeon to £55 million (about $90 million).

Nexeon said is engaged with global companies in the fields of consumer electronics and automotive transport. Nexeon chairman Paul Atherton, who founded the company in 2005 with Professor Mino Green of Imperial College, said the latest funding would allow Nexeon to build the first of a series of manufacturing plants.

Single-wall carbon nanotubes are usually about a nanometer in diameter, but they can be millions of nanometers in length. It's as if you took a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms, arranged in a hexagonal pattern, and curled it into a cylinder, like rolling up a piece of chicken wire. If you've tried the latter, you know that there are many possibilities, depending on how carefully you match up the edges, from neat, perfectly matched rows of hexagons ringing the cylinder, to rows that wrap in spirals at various angles -- "chiralities" in chemist-speak.

Chirality plays an important role in nanotube properties. Most behave like semiconductors, but a few are metals. One special chiral form -- the so-called "armchair carbon nanotube"* -- behaves like a pure metal and is the ideal quantum wire, according to NIST researcher Xiaomin Tu.

Armchair carbon nanotubes could revolutionize electric power systems, large and small, Tu says. Wires made from them are predicted to conduct electricity 10 times better than copper, with far less loss, at a sixth the weight. But researchers face two obstacles: producing totally pure starting samples of armchair nanotubes, and "cloning" them for mass production. The first challenge, as the authors note, has been "an elusive goal."

Separating one particular chirality of nanotube from all others starts with coating them to get them to disperse in solution, as, left to themselves, they'll clump together in a dark mass. A variety of materials have been used as dispersants, including polymers, proteins and DNA. The NIST trick is to select a DNA strand that has a particular affinity for the desired type of nanotube. In earlier work, team leader Ming Zheng and colleagues demonstrated DNA strands that could select for one of the semiconductor forms of carbon nanotubes, an easier target. In this new paper, the group describes how they methodically stepped through simple mutations of the semiconductor-friendly DNA to "evolve" a pattern that preferred the metallic armchair nanotubes instead.

"We believe that what happens is that, with the right nanotube, the DNA wraps helically around the tube," explains Constantine Khripin, "and the DNA nucleotide bases can connect with each other in a way similar to how they bond in double-stranded DNA." According to Zheng, "The DNA forms this tight barrel around the nanotube. I love this idea because it's kind of a lock and key. The armchair nanotube is a key that fits inside this DNA structure -- you have this kind of molecular recognition."

Once the target nanotubes are enveloped with the DNA, standard chemistry techniques such as chromatography can be used to separate them from the mix with high efficiency.

"Now that we have these pure nanotube samples," says team member Angela Hight Walker, "we can probe the underlying physics of these materials to further understand their unique properties. As an example, some optical features once thought to be indicative of metallic carbon nanotubes are not present in these armchair samples."

What if you were given a do-over on a completed project? You’d make it better, make it future-proof, maybe beat the boss at his own game.

The founders of Digital Interactive Interface for Video & Audio Consortium have gotten their mulligan. DiiVA backers and key staffers at home network specialist Synerchip, which has implemented the DiiVA interface in silicon, include Silicon Image alums who have reinvented the 10 year-old HDMI connectivity standard as an agile networking spec.

DiiVA pairs a bidirectional data channel (Ethernet and USB protocols) and a high-quality, uncompressed audio and video channel, with power carried over the same cable. The spec defines a “routable architecture” so that content and commands can be sent from any endpoint source device to any network display.

HDMI, by contrast, is a point-to-point interface—connecting a Blu-ray player and a TV, for example—that lacks a data channel. “HDMI is a 10-year-old legacy standard. Many things in the world have changed” since it was written, says Steve Yum, president of DiiVA Licensing LLC and an alumnus of HDMI pioneer Silicon Image.

Over the past 18 months, Chinese TV manufacturers including Haier, Hisense, Changhong, TCL and Panda have rallied around DiiVA. Chinese companies have long sought an alternative to HDMI that would allow them some measure of control over the spec. But it would be shortsighted to write off DiiVA as just another China-only standard designed to avoid HDMI royalty payments.

With DiiVA having earned the backing of both Chinese vendors and the government, CE vendors outside China are giving DiiVA an audience. In June, LG Electronics and Samsung submitted several TV models to the DiiVA Authorized Test Center in Guangzhou, China. Both passed the full DiiVA Compliance Test.

Tower, SiGe, silicon, germanium, process, semiconductor, foundry Tower transfers SiGe process to Israel

LONDON – Tower Semiconductor Ltd., a specialty foundry that trades under the name TowerJazz, has transferred a 130-nm silicon-germanium process from its Newport Beach fab to one at Migdal Haemek, Israel.

Tower said the SBL13 process as heavily analog that uses SiGe bipolar for the analog and CMOS for digital control and that it had enhanced the process with a copper interconnect back-end. The process is aimed at wireless RF and digital TV tuners. Tower said it has design wins from customers that want to use the copper back-end and that volume is expected to ramp in the first half of 2012.

The SBL13 process includes three NPN transistors with 40-, 74- and 100-GHz transition frequencies as well as high density passive elements such as high-density MIM capacitors and 3-micron thick copper inductors. 130-nm CMOS with copper metallization achieves digital logic densities of up to 200-kgates per square millimeter to result in higher performance and more highly integrated RF products.

"This helps extend our leadership in SiGe technology and provides a unique multi-fab SiGe sourcing capability for our customers," said Marco Racanelli, senior vice president and general manager of the RF and high performance analog business group at Tower, in a statement.

Britons addicted to their 'CrackBerries': study

Many Britons are welded to their smartphones 24 hours a day and refuse to turn them off in cinemas and theatres, according to a study Thursday showing how the devices are changing social behaviour.

Research for telecommunications watchdog Ofcom showed that more than a third of adults and a majority of teenagers say they are highly addicted to devices such as the iPhone and BlackBerry, often referred to as 'CrackBerry' by users for this reason.

Users are more likely than owners of standard mobile phones to never switch them off, and are more inclined to continue sending email or text messages even when at the cinema or the theatre.

They are also more likely to be hunched over their phones during social occasions such as meals with friends, the research showed.

Smartphones also encourage users to make more calls and send more text messages than regular mobile phone owners.

More than a quarter of adults and nearly half of all teenagers in Britain now own a smartphone.

And people who had bought a smartphone reported they had cut back on activities such as reading books and newspapers and watching TV.

A clear sign of their growing influence can be seen in their intrusion into holiday time, with users admitting they were more likely to take calls or consult emails from the office even when away.

James Thickett, director of research for Ofcom, said the insistence on keeping smartphones switched on in cinemas and theatres raised issues of social etiquette and tolerance.

"It raises an issue about social etiquette and modern manners and the degree to which we as a society are tolerant of this behaviour," he said.

"I think what we have found before is that teenagers have always been more likely to use mobile phones in cinemas and theatres.

"What we are finding now is that for smartphone users, it is much, much higher, but adult smartphone users as well.

"So it is not just about adults and teenagers having different values, it is about technology driving the values towards the way you behave in social situations."

Britons addicted to their 'CrackBerries': study

LONDON – Bridgelux Inc., a developer of semiconductor technology for solid-state lighting, has raised $60 million in a Series E round of venture capital funding.

The round was led by Craton Equity Partners and existing financial and strategic investors also participated including VantagePoint Capital Partners, DCM, El Dorado Ventures, Novus Energy Partners, Invus Group, VTS, Harris & Harris Group and Passport Capital.

Craton said Bridgelux (Livermore, Calif.) would use the money to accelerate R&D in key areas including GaN-on-Silicon development and LED chip-on-board packaging.

"Craton Equity Partners is a top growth-stage investor in clean tech, and we welcome their support as we work to expand the market for solid state solutions for general lighting - which we expect to triple this year to over $3 billion," said Bill Watkins, Bridgelux's CEO, in a statement issued by Craton.

David Asarnow, principal at Craton Equity Partners, will join the Bridgelux board as an observer.

MANHASSET, NY -- Agilent Technologies and the University of California, Davis, will establish the Davis Millimeter Wave Research Center to focus on millimeter wave and THz systems.

The technologies are to be used in radar, imaging systems, sensors, communications and integrated passive devices found in electromagnetic metamaterials and antennae.

The vertically integrated DMRC research will  involve devices, integrated circuits, packaging, metamaterials and defected ground integrated passives, imaging systems, THz vacuum electronics, THz micro-machined devices, nonlinear modeling, nanomaterials and wireless implantable devices.

These devices and systems are found in commercial products such as medical imaging systems, security scanners, gigabit wireless communications devices and sensors, as well as defense usages such as radar and active denial systems.

A center will serve as a core test facility for measurement capabilities provided, among others,   Agilent nonlinear vector network and spectrum analysis test equipment up to 325 GHz. These facilities will support gigabit wireless communications at 60 GHz and 80 GHz, as well as the imaging, radar and active denial systems to 325 GHz. 

“In launching the DMRC, our goal is to become a premier millimeter-wave research center nationally and internationally,” said Linda P.B. Katehi, chancellor of UC Davis, in a statement.

UC Davis is a 100-year learning center that has an annual research budget exceeding $678 million.

One the compact, wearable robotic hand is attached to the patient’s fingers and hand, it begins to detect his or her intention to move through signals from the hemiplegic side measured by surface electromyography. A nervous response then set the robotic hand in motion to move the patient’s stiff hand at his or her own will. The device affords substantial flexibility, as each finger assembly can be adjusted to fit different finger lengths.

Unlike the case with conventional rehabilitation treatment, the assistive power from the robotic hand helps to overcome muscle and joint stiffness, thus allowing the patient to open/close a paralysed hand or pick items up according to his or her own intention. Through repetitive exercises, the hand motions send feedback to the patient’s brain, helping it to rewire itself in response to new experiences.

The device has been licensed to the Deltason Medical Group, and clinical trials are well underway at the Shatin Hospital and Kowloon Hospital. It also won a Gold Medal at the 62nd International Trade Fair Ideas – Inventions – New Products in Nuremberg, Germany.

Sony portable not ready by Christmas in US, Europe

(AP) -- Sony's next-generation portable game machine, the PlayStation Vita, won't be available in the U.S. or Europe in time for Christmas - a crucial sales period for game console makers.

Expectations had been high the machine would be ready worldwide for the year-end holiday shopping season. Sony earlier promised a "phased global rollout" starting late this year.

Sony Corp. Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai said Thursday the PlayStation Vita will go on sale by the end of the year in Japan, and early next year in the U.S. and Europe.

Koki Shiraishi, electronics analyst for Daiwa Securities Capital Markets in Tokyo, said missing Christmas was a serious setback, especially overseas.

"That's when you do half your year's sales," he said. "This is going to prove painful for Sony."

Hirai did not characterize the timing as a delay, but said Sony wants to be prepared with solid game software offerings timed with the hardware launches.
