Emech Enclosures Next USB plug work both ways around, and be thin and small

2013/12/04

The next generation of USB connector will work either way around, and be similar in size to the existing USB 2.0 Micro-B – the one that most phones are charged through – and will deliver video.

Called USB Type-C, “users will no longer need to be concerned with plug orientation or cable direction, making it easier to plug in”, said the USB 3.0 Promoter Group. “The connector, built initially on existing USB 3.1 and USB 2.0 technologies, is being developed to help enable thinner and sleeker product designs, enhance usability and provide a growth path for performance enhancements for future versions of USB.” – including support ‘scalable power charging’ and ‘future USB bus performance’.

“This connector, delivering data, power and video, is the only connector one will need across all devices. It will enable an entirely new super thin class of devices from phones to tablets,” said Alex Peleg of Intel, whicvh partners HP, Microsoft, Renesas and Texas Instruments in the Promoter Group.

Review of the proposed specification will be during the first quarter of 2014, and open to outside comment. Final publication is expected by the middle of 2014 in a supplement to the USB 3.1 specification.

Test and Measurement Pico PC oscilloscopes get much smaller

Test and Measurement Pico PC oscilloscopes get much smaller

2013/12/04

04dec13picoHand 600Pico Technology has cut the size of its 2000 series of 200MHz PC oscilloscopes by almost 80%, to around the size of a passport, in a project that started as a challenge between engineers.

“They are as thin as can they can possibly be made and still have BNC connectors,” Pico MD Alan Tong told Electronics Weekly.

built in britain 190Pico’s scopes connect to a PC or laptop through USB. The scope box handles signal acquisition, triggering, primary processing and primary storage. Running software called PicoScope, the laptop takes care of display, user controls, secondary storage, and secondary signal processing. There are six scope families in the company’s range (see below), all designed and made in the UK.

Until now, the 2000 series has been in two different sized enclosures – the larger case for the faster members of the family. Now all versions are in the new case, which is smaller than either of the originals, except the mixed-signal version which needs extra room for its logic connector.

The shrink project started unusually: as a self-imposed challenge between a handful of engineers during the firm’s weekly blue-sky time.

“For the last 8-10 years, our engineers have had half a day to work on anything they want so long as it is vaguely connected to being useful to the company: learning French, hardware engineers learning software, all sorts of things,” said Tong. “A group decided to see how small they could make an oscilloscope without compromising on performance. They kept the project secret until they had a working prototype complete with enclosure. When I saw it I was immediately sold on the idea, it was a product I wanted to own myself.”

04dec13PicoPCB 600Squeezing analogue circuitry can help performance as there is less area to pick up noise, but eventually smaller does not equate to better. “We have pretty strict guidelines on parameters like cross-talk, overshoot, and gain flatness. Cross-talk gets worse as channels get closer together,” said Tong.

Electronically, the design is based on the original 2000 series.

“There are some changes to the front-end for fewer parts, and some parts are in smaller-sized packages – there were a lot of BGAs already,” said Tong. “The screening cans were quite challenging – to make them thin and make them work, and we found someone who would make a different style of BNC – that was the only real custom part.”

Mechanically, the enclosure had to hug the components as closely as possible. Ideas could be tried quickly because Pico has its own 3D printer.

“They were fanatical about shaving height off the product,” said Tong. “Normally the whole thing would take months and costs thousands. With the 3d printer, we set it going over night and it gave us a descent-looking enclosure, and we sent out for more expensive prototypes in later stages. There were 12 prototypes eventually, some transparent to make sure no space was being wasted.”

Overall, the engineers “managed to hit the same performance speed, and gained slightly in memory, noise and cross-talk,” he added.

Now called the 2000A family, the enclosure is 19mm thick, with a 92x142mm footprint (plus BNC connectors), and weighs 200g.

Full bandwidth crosstalk is better than 200:1 (channels set to equal gain), or 400:1 for the faster members of the family. Noise is <150μVrms (+/-50mV range), or <200μVrms on faster members. Bandwidth flatness is +0.3dB -3dB from dc to full bandwidth.

Two important input figures are <-50dB harmonic distortion and >52dB SFDR (spurious free dynamic range) – both at full-scale and 100kHz.

04dec13PicoClose 600Do the new versions cost more to make?

“Cost is neutral. We have gone from 2000 to 2000A for the same price, so there is no problem for distributors,” said Tong.

And, is it so small it slides around on the bench?

“No, there are some descent rubber grips underneath, and it is the same weight. It’s so small, I now carry an oscilloscope in my laptop bag all the time.”

Maximum real-time sampling is 1Gsample/s and, for repetitive signals, equivalent-time sampling can boost effective sampling rate to 10Gsample/s. Up to 48ksample of segmented memory is available for rapid capture.

There is adjustable analogue offset over the full input range, and a built-in signal source: either a sine-square-triangle function generator with programmable sweep, or a 12bit 20Msample/s arbitrary waveform generator.

USB streaming is up to 1Msample/s, for waveform captures up to 100 million samples, and all scopes support configurable length pre-trigger and post-trigger capture.

Standard features including an FFT spectrum analyser, math channels, automatic measurements, colour persistence display mode, mask limit testing and serial decoding (CAN bus, LIN bus, FlexRay, SPI, I2C, I2S, UART).

04dec13PicoScreen 639Triggering is all-digital, based on post converter bits rather than analogue comparators. “This reduces trigger errors and allows our oscilloscopes to trigger small signals, even at the full bandwidth,” claims the firm. “Digital triggering, together with segmented memory, allows the capture of events that happen in rapid sequence. At the fastest time-base, triggering can capture a new waveform every 2µs until the buffer is full.”

A free SDK (software development kit) with example code is available for customers writing their own applications in C, Visual Basic, National Instruments’ LabView or MathWorks’ Matlab.

Including hardware, software, and a 5 year warranty, prices range from £159 to 599 ($262-988, €192-725) depending on bandwidth and signal generator type.

Pico Technology is based in St. Neots, Cambridgeshire. It has six ranges of PC oscilloscpoes, many of which are USB-powered. Company MD Alan Tong unravels them thus:

2000 – Physically small, and now even smaller
3000 – Deep memory
4000 – High resolution
5000 – Flexible resolution (USB-powered for two channels, separate supply for four)
6000 – High performance, high specification (mains power only)
9000 – Sampling

Depression in pregnant mothers may alter the pattern of brain development in their babies

Depression in pregnant mothers may alter the pattern of brain development in their babies

Children of depressed parents are at an increased risk of developing depression themselves, a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. These children also display alterations in the amygdala, a brain structure important for the regulation of emotion and stress. However, prior work in this area has assessed children years after birth, which means that the timing of these alterations has remained unidentified.

Researchers led by Dr. Anqi Qiu at the National University of Singapore now have the answers, with their new work published in the current issue of Biological Psychiatry.

They set out to perform a direct analysis of prenatal maternal depression and variation in the fetal development of the amygdala. To do so, they recruited 157 pregnant women who completed a depression questionnaire during their 26th week of pregnancy. Later, within two weeks of birth, newborns underwent magnetic resonance imaging scans to ascertain the structure of their amygdala and diffusion tensor imaging scans to determine the integrity of the amygdala's pattern of neural connections.

The volume of the amygdala did not differ between the infants regardless of their mothers' depression status. However, the researchers found significantly reduced structural connectivity (i.e., lower fractional anisotropy and lower axial diffusivity) in the right amygdala of infants of mothers with high levels of depression symptoms. In other words, the amygdala's microstructure (e.g., its "wiring") was abnormal in the infants born to depressed mothers.

This important finding suggests that a propensity for abnormal amygdala function, a feature of mood and anxiety disorders, may be transmitted from mother to child during fetal life. This finding suggests one new path that a history of maternal depression might contribute to a life-long increase in the vulnerability to mental illness.

This study provides added evidence supporting the notion that mental health screening should be included among the medical evaluations that women undergo when they discover that they are pregnant. Indeed, the authors conclude that their study supports that "interventions targeting maternal depression should begin early in pregnancy."

"Attention to maternal health during pregnancy is an extremely high priority for society for many reasons," added Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "The notion that maternal depression might influence the brain development of their babies is very concerning. The good news is that this risk might be reduced by systematic screening of pregnant women for depression and initiating effective treatment."

Harlequin ladybugs escape enemies while native species succumb

Harlequin ladybugs escape enemies while native species succumb

Dec. 4, 2013 — The astonishing success of the alien invasive harlequin ladybird in Britain has given a team of scientists a unique opportunity to investigate a key ecological theory -- the Enemy Release Hypothesis.

Share This:

The Enemy Release Hypothesis predicts that when a new alien species arrives into a country or region it is unlikely that the resident natural enemies will attack it.

Writing in the latest issue of the scientific journal Insect Conservation and Diversity the scientists conclude that, in the first ten years of the harlequin ladybird invasion -- the Harlequin arrived in the UK in 2004 -- it was much less likely to succumb to natural enemies (such as predators, parasites and pathogens) than the UK's native ladybird species such as the iconic 7-spot. Such natural enemies have evolved alongside native species and the research showed that they are less able to attack the new arrival.

The result may partly explain why the harlequin ladybird is such a successful invasive alien species -- supporting the notion that the harlequin is the "most invasive alien ladybird on Earth."

Ladybirds are generally not attacked by predators but there are a number of parasites -- species that live in or on another species, so called hosts, deriving nutrients and usually resulting in death of the host -- that exploit them. Ladybird parasites include wasps and flies (such as scuttles flies).

One of the most numerous ladybird parasites is a tiny wasp called Dinocampus coccinellae. It lays an egg inside a ladybird and subsequently hatches into a grub-like larva that devours the inside of the ladybird before emerging to pupate under the adult ladybird. It uses the adult ladybird as a bodyguard which twitches defensively above the small parasitic cocoon. The parasitic wasp emerges and the ladybird host dies.

The researchers monitored Harlequin ladybirds (Harmonia axyridis) and the native 7-spot ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata) for natural enemies over four years, from populations across southern England in areas first invaded by the harlequin ladybird between 2004 and 2009.

The study showed that about one in ten 7-spot ladybirds were parasitized by Dinocampus coccinellae whereas less than one in 100 harlequin ladybirds were parasitized The other common parasites that the team examined also favoured the native species of ladybird over the alien harlequin. The team found no evidence that the close proximity of harlequin ladybirds detracted the parasites from attacking the native species.

Paper lead author Richard Comont who carried out the research as a PhD student at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and is now Data Monitoring Officer at the BumbleBee Conservation Trust, said, "It's really exciting to find that native parasitoid species are attacking the harlequin, but they're only doing so in really small numbers -- the native 7-spot ladybird is almost 11 times more likely to be eaten than the harlequin. That really shows in part why the harlequin is increasing so quickly -- there's nothing holding it back."

Co-author Dr Helen Roy from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology said, "The presence of the harlequin ladybird in Britain has given us the opportunity to test the enemy release hypothesis, a key ecological theory. Our work clearly demonstrates how some alien invasive species such as the harlequin ladybird can escape predators and parasites allowing them to successfully and rapidly spread across a country such as the UK."

Dr Roy added, "We need people to keep sending in records to the UK Ladybird Survey and we would be delighted to hear about any sightings of parasitized ladybirds. Every observation helps us to unravel the story of this alien invader and more broadly to our understanding of invasion biology."

Embedded Systems ARM data kit for C in functionally safe systems

Embedded Systems ARM data kit for C in functionally safe systems

2013/12/04

ARM has announced a document package intended to ease the certification of its compiler against safety standards such as IEC 61508 and ISO 26262.

It has also started a series of ‘extended maintenance’ compiler version which are guaranteed to be maintained for years. The first one, v5.04, is to be maintained for five years until 2018. The next will overlap, being introduced in 2016. These will be updated with defect repairs, but not gain new functions.

“The ARM architecture is finding its way into more safety-related applications. Until now it has been left up to the customer to prove the compiler tool-chain is doing what it is supposed to be doing,” Daniel Owens, compiler product manager at ARM told Electronics Weekly.

Called the Compiler Qualification Kit, the document package consists of:

Safety Manual – informs the customer how to configure the tool-chain for safety-related projects, including recommended use cases and mitigation strategies for potential errors.

Defect Reports – a listing of known defects and workarounds, whether found via internal testing or customer reported. Until now, only repaired defects were made public. “It takes a fair amount of work to take a customer report and turn it around for other customers. We haven’t done it before,” said Owens. These reports will be referenced to extended maintenance versions of the tool-chain.

Test Report – provides a list of C language conformance tests passed, based on ISO C90 and C99 language conformant input.

Development Process – provides a description of the internal software development process used to produce the tool-chain, including procedures for requirements and defect management, procedures for configuration management, traceability between source code commits and defects or requirements, and validation procedures.

Some compiler vendors get a third party to assess their tool-chains. Why not ARM?

“Our approach is to provide information directly to customers. The end user still has to do due diligence,” said Owens. “There is no accreditation body that qualifies tool-chains. A third party can say you meet requirement of a standard [in one or a limited number of ways], but requirements are vague because typically there are many ways to do things and meet the requirements. It is not good enough in my opinion.”

Dads: How important are they?

Dads: How important are they?

Dec. 4, 2013 — Even with today's technology, it still takes both a male and a female to make a baby. But is it important for both parents to raise that child? Many studies have outlined the value of a mother, but few have clearly defined the importance of a father, until now. New findings from the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) show that the absence of a father during critical growth periods, leads to impaired social and behavioral abilities in adults. This research, which was conducted using mice, was published today in the journal Cerebral Cortex. It is the first study to link father absenteeism with social attributes and to correlate these with physical changes in the brain.

Share This:

"Although we used mice, the findings are extremely relevant to humans," says senior author Dr. Gabriella Gobbi, a researcher of the Mental Illness and Addiction Axis at the RI-MUHC and an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. "We used California mice which, like in some human populations, are monogamous and raise their offspring together."

"Because we can control their environment, we can equalize factors that differ between them," adds first author, Francis Bambico, a former student of Dr. Gobbi at McGill and now a post-doc at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto. "Mice studies in the laboratory may therefore be clearer to interpret than human ones, where it is impossible to control all the influences during development."

Dr. Gobbi and her colleagues compared the social behavior and brain anatomy of mice that had been raised with both parents to those that had been raised only by their mothers. Mice raised without a father had abnormal social interactions and were more aggressive than counterparts raised with both parents. These effects were stronger for female offspring than for their brothers. Females raised without fathers also had a greater sensitivity to the stimulant drug, amphetamine.

"The behavioral deficits we observed are consistent with human studies of children raised without a father," says Dr. Gobbi, who is also a psychiatrist at the MUHC. "These children have been shown to have an increased risk for deviant behavior and in particular, girls have been shown to be at risk for substance abuse. This suggests that these mice are a good model for understanding how these effects arise in humans."

In pups deprived of fathers, Dr. Gobbi's team also identified defects in the mouse prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain that helps control social and cognitive activity, which is linked to the behavioral deficits.

"This is the first time research findings have shown that paternal deprivation during development affects the neurobiology of the offspring," says Dr. Gobbi. These results should incite researchers to look more deeply into the role of fathers during critical stages of growth and suggest that both parents are important in children's mental health development.

Fruit pest targeted by genomic research

Fruit pest targeted by genomic research

Dec. 4, 2013 — The spotted wing drosophila, a major pest that targets berries and cherries and other fruits in the United States, Canada and Europe, is itself being targeted, thanks to groundbreaking genome sequencing at the University of California, Davis, and a public-access Web portal hosted at Oregon State University.

Share This:

The work is expected to accelerate basic and applied research, leading to better monitoring and control strategies for the pest.

Officially published Dec. 1 in the journal G3 (Genes, Genomics, Genetics), the open-access research has been available online for several weeks and drawing global attention.

"To enable basic and applied research of this important pest, Drosophila suzukii, we sequenced the genome to obtain a high-quality reference sequence," said molecular geneticist Joanna Chiu of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology. Chiu and Professor David Begun of the UC Davis Department of Evolution and Ecology led the genomics team of collaborative researchers from four institutions.

The posting of the genome and comparative sequence analysis on the publicly accessible SpottedWingFlyBase Web portal could lead to more species-specific weapons to combat the destructive pest, Chiu said. Scientists are looking at its biology, behavior, food and odor preferences, and pesticide resistance.

"Many researchers are working hard to study the biology of this insect through basic and applied projects, and we hope our efforts in presenting our genomic data in a user-friendly Web portal will democratize the sequence data and help facilitate everyone's research, especially those who do not have expertise in genome and sequence analysis," she said.

The spotted wing drosophila, a native of Asia that was first detected in the United States in 2008, is wreaking economic havoc on crops such as blueberries, cherries, blackberries and raspberries. This fly lays its eggs inside the ripe or ripening fruit, and the developing larvae feed on the soft fruit, crippling crop yields.

The spotted wing drosophila is a vinegar fly about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long with red eyes, pale brown thorax, and a black-striped abdomen. The males have a distinguishing black spot toward the tip of each wing. Females have no spots but have a prominent, saw-like ovipositor for drilling fruit to lay their eggs.

Chiu teamed with scientists at UC Davis, Oregon State University, the China National Gene Bank and the American Museum of Natural History as part of a $5.8 million project on the biology and management of spotted wing drosophila, funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture Specialty Crops Research Initiative grant to OSU entomologist Vaughn Walton and a team of investigators including Professor Frank Zalom of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology, who is the lead UC Davis investigator.

Zalom, recently inducted as president of the nearly 7,000-member Entomological Society of America, said that the G3 article "presents a high-quality reference sequence of Drosophila suzukii, examination of the basic properties of its genome and transcriptome, and description of patterns of genome evolution in relation to its close relatives."

The SpottedWingFlybase Web portal has drawn more than 3,000 page views from 20 countries, including the United States, France, Italy, Belgium, China, Spain, Japan, Germany and Great Britain.

"Given this impressive response and the worldwide importance of Drosophila suzukii, I expect that the G3 article will become very highly cited and cast Joanna Chiu as a central figure in future Drosophila suzukii genomic studies related to topics such as insecticide detoxification, odorant reception and regulatory entomology," Zalom said.

OSU entomologist Vaughn Walton, lead investigator of the USDA grant, said: "Scientists from all over the world are interested in knowledge locked inside the fly's genetic material." He also pointed out that the genome work may relieve the fears of countries wishing to import American fruit, but not the pest. By finding the fly's unique genetic signature, scientists hope that DNA testing will quickly determine if ready-to-be-shipped fruit contains spotted wing drosophila larvae.

The UC Davis team included the Joanna Chiu lab and the Frank Zalom lab, both in Department of Entomology and Nematology, and David Begun's drosophila evolutionary genetics lab in the Department of Evolution and Ecology. They collaborated with Walton and spotted wing drosophila project leader Linda Brewer of OSU; Ernest Lee from the American Museum of Natural History; and Xuanting Jiang and Guojie Zhang of the China National Genebank, BGI-Shenzhen.

Other UC Davis scientists involved in the research included doctoral candidates Kelly Hamby of the Zalom lab, Rosanna Kwok of the Chiu lab, as well as postdoctoral researchers Li Zhao, Christopher Hamm, Julie M. Cridland and research technician Perot Saelao of the Begun lab.

The SpottedWingFlyBase is a dedicated online resource for Drosophila suzukii genomics but also includes comparative genomic analysis of Drosophila suzukii with other closely related Drosophila species.

First global snapshot of key coral reef fishes: Fishing has reduced vital seaweed eaters by more than 50 percent

First global snapshot of key coral reef fishes: Fishing has reduced vital seaweed eaters by more than 50 percent

Beyond their natural beauty and tourist-attraction qualities, coral reefs offer economic value estimated at billions of dollars for societies around the world. Scripps Master's student Clinton Edwards, his advisor Jennifer Smith, and their colleagues at the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Scripps, along with scientists from several international institutions, have pieced together the first global synthesis on the state of plant-eating fish at coral reef sites around the world. These herbivorous fish populations are vital to coral reef health due to their role in consuming seaweed, making them known informally as the "lawnmowers" of the reef. Without the lawnmowers, seaweeds can overgrow and out-compete corals, drastically affecting the reef ecosystem.

Among their findings, the researchers found that populations of plant-eating fish declined by more than half in areas that were fished compared with unfished sites.

"One of the most significant findings from this study is that we show compelling evidence that fishing is impacting some of the most important species on coral reefs," said Smith. "We generally tend to think of fishing impacting larger pelagic fishes such as tuna but here we see big impacts on smaller reef fish as well and particularly the herbivores. This is particularly important because corals and algae are always actively competing against one another for space and the herbivores actively remove algae and allow the corals to be competitively dominant. Without herbivores, weedy algae can take over the reef landscape. We need to focus more on protecting this key group of fishes around the globe if we hope to have healthy and productive reefs in the future."

"While these reef fish are not generally commercial fisheries targets," said Edwards, "there is clear evidence from this study that fishing is impacting their populations globally." Edwards, a UC San Diego graduate, recently completed his Masters thesis at Scripps where he said his experience and the opportunities he was given to conduct research were unparalleled.

The researchers also found that fishing alters the entire structure of the herbivore fish community, reducing the numbers of large-bodied feeding groups such as "grazers" and "excavators" while boosting numbers of smaller species such as algae-farming territorial damselfishes that enhance damaging algae growth.

"These results show that fished reefs may be lacking the ability to provide specific functions needed to sustain reef health," said Edwards.

"We are shifting the herbivore community from one that's dominated by large-bodied individuals to one that's dominated by many small fish," said Smith. "The biomass is dramatically altered. If you dive in Jamaica you are going to see lots of tiny herbivores because fishers remove them before they reach adulthood. In contrast, if you go to an unfished location in the central Pacific the herbivore community is dominated by large roving parrotfishes and macroalgal grazers that perform many important ecosystem services for reefs."

The authors argue that such evidence from their assessment should be used in coral reef management and conservation, offering regional managers data to show whether key herbivores are fished down too low and when they've successfully recovered in marine protected areas.

"This assessment allows us to set management goals in different regions across the globe," said Smith. "Regional managers can use these data as a baseline to set targets to develop herbivore-specific fisheries management areas. We should be using these important fish as a tool for reef restoration. On reefs where seaweed is actively growing over reefs, what better way to remove that seaweed than to bring back those consumers, those lawnmowers?"

In addition to Edwards and Smith, coauthors include Brian Zgliczynski and Stuart Sandin from Scripps; Alan Friedlander of the U.S. Geological Survey; Allison Green of the Nature Conservancy; Marah Hardt of OceanInk; Enric Sala of the National Geographic Society; Hugh Sweatman of the Australian Institute of Marine Science; and Ivor Williams of the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and NOAA through the Comparative Analysis of Marine Ecosystem Organization (CAMEO) program.

Business Sony, Renesas pursue fab deal

Business Sony, Renesas pursue fab deal

2013/12/04

Sony is talking about buying Renesas’ Tsuruoka fab to make CMOS image sensors, reports Japan’s Nikkei newspaper.

Sony’s semiconductor sales are expected to fall 28% this year to $4.4 billion and 77% of the company’s chip sales are accounted for by sensors.

The company has earmarked $585 million for investment in its chip business this financial year. The Renesas fab will cost about $100 million. It employs 900 people.

The alternative to buying the Renesas fab is to invest the $100 million in Sony’s own fabs.

Sony is making a big push in CMOS image sensors where it sees great opportunities.

Sony’s new CEO Kaz Hirai said last year: “We can leverage our technology base in image-capturing sensors, lenses, 3D technology, image processing, to mention just a few areas. Those are areas where we already have in-house technologies that really allow us to differentiate ourselves.”

Hirai said that Sony will speed up development of its CMOS technology and seek new products in which CMOS can be used. He emphasized medical equipment products as a key market for its image sensors where people will pay for outstanding quality.

Sony is engaged with Imec in a project developing core CMOS technology which, earlier this year, announced the world’s first functioning CMOS compatible III-V FinFET device processed on silicon wafers.

It is thought that a deal for the Tsuruoka fab will be signed next week.
