Tiny drops of hot quark soup -- how small can they be?

Tiny drops of hot quark soup -- how small can they be?

Collisions between gold nuclei and deuterons -- much smaller particles made of just one proton and one neutron -- weren't supposed to create this superhot subatomic soup known as quark-gluon plasma (QGP). They were designed as a control experiment, to generate data to compare against RHIC's gold-gold smashups. But new analyses indicate that these smaller particle impacts may be serving up miniscule drops of hot QGP -- a finding consistent with similar results from Europe's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which can also collide heavy nuclei.

"Considering that the quark-gluon plasma we create in gold-gold collisions at RHIC fills a space that is approximately the size of the nucleus of a single gold atom, the possible hot spots we're talking about in these deuteron-gold collisions are much, much smaller -- and an intriguing surprise," said Dave Morrison, a physicist at Brookhaven and co-spokesperson for RHIC's PHENIX collaboration. The collaboration describes their results in two papers just published by Physical Review Letters, one of which is highlighted by the journal.

The findings at RHIC and the LHC have triggered active debate about their interpretation. Said PHENIX co-spokesperson Jamie Nagle of the University of Colorado, "There isn't yet universal agreement about what we're seeing in these small systems, but if indeed nearly perfect fluid droplets of quark-gluon plasma are being formed, this may be a perfect testing ground for understanding the essential conditions for creating this remarkable state of matter."

New analyses

The PHENIX scientists' evidence for the possibility of tiny hot spots comes from taking a closer look at data collected by their namesake detector, one of two large particle trackers at RHIC, during deuteron-gold collisions in 2008. The group was inspired to conduct a new analysis after hints of QGP-like behavior emerged from similar control experiments in the heavy-ion physics program at the LHC.

When not searching for particles such as the Higgs boson, the LHC spends a few weeks during each experimental run colliding beams of lead nuclei to create and study QGP at higher energies than RHIC, using protons instead of deuterons for its control experiments. In those control collisions (between lead nuclei with protons and also in some collisions of protons with protons), LHC scientists observed certain "signatures" that were surprisingly reminiscent of those generated by QGP -- namely similar patterns of particle production and correlations in how particles flow out of the collisions.

When PHENIX physicists took a closer look at their data from deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC, they saw the same telltale effects.

Correlations in particle "flow"

"As you look around the collision and measure the particles detected at different angles, it's not just a random array of particles coming out. There are strong correlations among some of the particles," Morrison said. For example, if a particle emerges in one direction, you are more likely to see a "correlated" particle emerging in a particular, predictable direction (for example, back-to-back or alongside one another), rather than in random directions.

These correlations produce an asymmetric distribution of particles as they expand from the collision zone, with more particles flowing out in an elliptically shaped area close to the plane of the colliding beams than perpendicular to it. This elliptical flow pattern is one of the defining characteristics of the quark-gluon plasma created in gold-gold collisions at RHIC.

"In the relatively big drop of quark-gluon plasma created in gold-gold collisions, which flows like a friction-free 'perfect' liquid, there's all sorts of collective motion that gives you that pattern. But it was not expected to see this in these smaller systems," he said.

The strength of these particle correlations in deuteron-gold collisions increases the higher the momentum of the particles, said Brookhaven/PHENIX physicist Anne Sickles, who led the group analyzing and writing up the flow results. That pattern fits the models of "hydrodynamic" flow used to describe the behavior of hot QGP. "Even though the system -- the hot spot created in these deuteron-gold collisions -- is very small, it shows particle correlations similar to those understood to be triggered by flow in much larger collisions of gold on gold," Sickles said.

If signs of flow persist to higher levels of correlations -- for example, producing flow patterns with three or more lobes instead of simple ellipses -- it would be a clear sign that the deuteron is somehow altering the state of the tiny portion of the gold nucleus with which it interacts. Data from the LHC have already revealed some evidence for these higher-level correlations. Future runs colliding deuterons, protons, or helium nuclei with gold at RHIC have the potential to provide the definitive test by changing the shape of the initial hot spot and looking for corresponding changes in particle correlation patterns.

Differential dips in particles counted

Other intriguing findings emerged when PHENIX physicists looked at the relative numbers of particles containing "charm" and "anticharm" quarks counted in RHIC's various collisions. Charm and anticharm quarks don't exist in ordinary matter, so all the charm and anticharm particles picked up by RHIC's detectors are created in the collisions. But there are several ways these particles and their antiparticles can combine, with the charm and anticharm particles in one arrangement (J/psi particles) being more tightly bound together than in others (e.g. psi prime). Counting the numbers of the different combinations emerging from different types of collisions could offer clues about what's happening inside.

For example, PHENIX scientists compared the numbers of J/psi and psi prime particles counted by their detector in glancing deuteron-gold collisions -- where the smaller deuteron just nicks the edge of the big gold nucleus -- with those emerging from more central collisions -- where the deuteron pierces the center of the gold nucleus.

The glancing collisions produced results very similar to those from proton-proton collisions. "It was as if the deuteron was colliding with a single proton at the edge of the gold nucleus," said Darren McGlinchey of the University of Colorado, who led the group that wrote the paper on these results.

In the central collisions, however, where the deuteron interacts with more protons and neutrons inside the nucleus, the detectors counted fewer of both types of charm-anticharm particles than would be expected from these multiple interactions. Additionally, the number of the less-tightly bound charm-anticharm pairs (the psi prime particles) was suppressed more than the tightly bound J/psi's -- and this difference got bigger the more central the collisions were.

"This differential particle suppression suggests that something novel is going on in the more central deuteron-gold collisions," McGlinchey said.

Is it something that happens in the collision -- perhaps interactions of the particles with tiny specks of quark-gluon plasma, causing them to lose energy and get "stuck" as happens in the big drops of QGP formed in gold-gold collisions? Or is it due to some characteristic of the bigger nucleus that exists before the collision even takes place?

That question of before or after -- which physicists refer to as initial state vs. final state effects -- is a big part of the debate going on right now about these findings from both RHIC and the LHC.

Other explanations

Some theorists, for example, suggest that the correlations in particle flow patterns observed in deuteron-gold and proton-lead collisions could be triggered not by tiny specks of hot quark-gluon plasma, but instead by properties of the "cold" nuclei themselves. These nuclei, they say, reveal a different aspect of their identity when moving close to the speed of light.

Their evidence comes from experiments at other colliders revealing that the quarks and gluons making up protons and neutrons are far from static. They constantly move about and even blink in and out of existence, forming new particles and disappearing like fireflies blinking on and off in the evening sky -- with the gluons, in particular, proliferating profusely to the point where they dominate the nuclei.

Because light speed motion stretches time, it effectively freezes this action so the fast moving nuclei appear as dense walls of gluons, called color glass condensates, which are thicker in the center of the speeding nuclei than near their edges. These variations in the distribution of gluons within the nuclei might account for some of the unusual signs observed when smaller particles like deuterons or protons collide with the nuclei. The gluon walls may even play a role in the formation of "large" scale quark-gluon plasma in nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Next steps

Separating the initial state effects from the final state effects is important if scientists want to fully understand the subtle details of the big drops of QGP created at RHIC and the LHC.

"In gold-gold collisions, there are initial state effects and final state effects but they are entangled," said Morrison. "In deuteron-gold, there are still initial and final state effects, but you would expect initial state effects to be more important than final state ones in the smaller system -- because even if you are making tiny drops of quark-gluon plasma, the bulk of the nucleus still exists in its initial state. These deuteron-gold collisions are therefore still valid control experiments for comparison with gold-gold." Comparing proton-lead collisions at the LHC with RHIC's existing deuteron-gold collisions -- as well as possible future deuteron-gold, proton-gold, and helium-gold collisions -- may provide an extra handle that highlights RHIC's unique versatility.

Another way to disentangle the roles played by conditions before and after the collisions would be to probe the light-speed nuclei with extreme precision using a beam of accelerated electrons. Brookhaven Lab has a vision for transforming RHIC into a machine with that capability -- known as an electron ion collider -- by adding an electron accelerator ring to the existing RHIC infrastructure sometime in the 2020s. The new facility would be called eRHIC.

"Using electrons and small nuclei such as protons, deuterons, and helium to probe the larger, heavy nuclei are complementary ways to get a complete picture of what's going on inside the nucleus," said Nagle. That glimpse of the inner workings of atomic nuclei will help scientists better understand the quark gluon plasma -- and possibly how that primordial soup ultimately gave rise to the bulk of visible matter in today's world.

Surprising diversity in aging revealed in nature

Surprising diversity in aging revealed in nature

Dec. 8, 2013 — In our youth we are strong and healthy and then we weaken and die -- that's probably how most would describe what aging is all about. But, in nature, the phenomenon of aging shows an unexpected diversity of patterns and is altogether rather strange, conclude researchers from The University of Southern Denmark.

Share This:

Not all species weaken and become more likely to die as they age. Some species get stronger and less likely to die with age, while others are not affected by age at all. Increasing weakness with age is not a law of nature.

Researchers from the University of Southern Denmark have studied aging in 46 very different species including mammals, plants, fungi and algae, and they surprisingly find that there is a huge diversity in how different organisms age. Some become weaker with age -- this applies to e.g. humans, other mammals, and birds; others become stronger with age -- this applies to e.g. tortoises and certain trees, and others become neither weaker nor stronger -- this applies to e.g. Hydra, a freshwater polyp.

"Many people, including scientists, tend to think that aging is inevitable and occurs in all organisms on Earth as it does for humans: that every species becomes weaker with age and more likely to die. But that is not the case," says evolutionary biologist and assistant professor Owen Jones from the Max-Planck Odense Center at the University of Southern Denmark .

He is the lead author of an article on the subject in the scientific journal Nature. Other authors are from the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, the University of Queensland in Australia, University of Amsterdam in Holland and elsewhere.

Owen Jones and his colleagues studied aging in species ranging from oak trees, nematodes, baboons and lice to seaweed and lions. The species included 11 mammals, 12 other vertebrates, 10 invertebrates, 12 plants and one algae.

"The diversity of mortality and fertility patterns in these organisms surprised us, and there is clearly a need for more research before we fully understand the evolutionary causes of aging and become better able to address problems of aging in humans," says Owen Jones.

He points out that while there is plenty of scientific data on aging in mammals and birds, there is only sparse and incomplete data on aging in other groups of vertebrates, and most invertebrates, plants, algae, and fungi.

For several species mortality increases with age -- as expected by evolutionary scientists. This pattern is seen in most mammal species including humans and killer whales, but also in invertebrates like water fleas. However, other species experience a decrease in mortality as they age, and in some cases mortality drops all the way up to death. This applies to species like the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) which experiences the highest mortality early on in life and a steadily declining mortality as it ages. Many plant species, e.g. the white mangrove tree (Avicennia marina) follow the same pattern.

Amazingly, there are also species that have constant mortality and remain unaffected by the aging process. This is most striking in the freshwater polyp Hydra magnipapillata which has constant low mortality. In fact, in lab conditions, it has such a low risk of dying at any time in its life that it is effectively immortal.

"Extrapolation from laboratory data show that even after 1400 years five per cent of a hydra population kept in these conditions would still be alive," says Owen Jones.

Several animal and plant species show remarkably little change in mortality throughout their life course. For example, these include rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum), great tit (Parus major), hermit crab (Pagurus longicarpus), common lizard (Lacerta vivapara), collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis), viburnum plants (Viburnum furcatum ), oarweed (Laminaria digitata), red abalone (Haliotis rufescens), the plant armed saltbush (Atriplex acanthocarpa), red-legged frog (Rana aurora) and the coral red gorgonian (Paramuricea clavata).

When you look at the fertility patterns of the 46 surveyed species, there is also a great diversity and some large departures from the common beliefs about aging. Human fertility is characterized by being concentrated in a relatively short period of life, and by the fact that humans live for a rather long time both before and after the fertile period.

A similar pattern of a concentrated fertile period is also seen in other mammals like killer whales, chimpanzees, and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), and also in birds like sparrow hawks (Accipiter nisus).

However, there are also species that become more and more fertile with age, and this pattern is especially common in plants such as the agave (Agave marmorata) and the rare mountain plants hypericum (Hypericum cumulicola) and borderea (Borderea pyrenaica).

On the contrary fertility occurs very early in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. Actually this species starts its life with being fertile, then it quite quickly and quite suddenly loses the ability to produce offspring.

To sum up there is no strong correlation between the patterns of aging and the typical life spans of the species. Species can have increasing mortality and still live a long time, or have declining mortality and still live a short time.

"It makes no sense to consider aging to be based on how old a species can become. Instead, it is more interesting to define aging as being based on the shape of mortality trajectories: whether rates increase, decrease or remain constant with age," says Owen Jones.

Vast freshwater reserves found beneath the oceans

Vast freshwater reserves found beneath the oceans

Dec. 8, 2013 — Scientists have discovered huge reserves of freshwater beneath the oceans kilometres out to sea, providing new opportunities to stave off a looming global water crisis.

Share This:

A new study, published December 5 in the international scientific journal Nature, reveals that an estimated half a million cubic kilometres of low-salinity water are buried beneath the seabed on continental shelves around the world.

The water, which could perhaps be used to eke out supplies to the world's burgeoning coastal cities, has been located off Australia, China, North America and South Africa.

"The volume of this water resource is a hundred times greater than the amount we've extracted from the Earth's sub-surface in the past century since 1900," says lead author Dr Vincent Post (pictured) of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT) and the School of the Environment at Flinders University.

"Knowing about these reserves is great news because this volume of water could sustain some regions for decades."

Dr Post says that groundwater scientists knew of freshwater under the seafloor, but thought it only occurred under rare and special conditions.

"Our research shows that fresh and brackish aquifers below the seabed are actually quite a common phenomenon," he says.

These reserves were formed over the past hundreds of thousands of years when on average the sea level was much lower than it is today, and when the coastline was further out, Dr Post explains.

"So when it rained, the water would infiltrate into the ground and fill up the water table in areas that are nowadays under the sea.

"It happened all around the world, and when the sea level rose when ice caps started melting some 20,000 years ago, these areas were covered by the ocean.

"Many aquifers were -- and are still -- protected from seawater by layers of clay and sediment that sit on top of them."

The aquifers are similar to the ones below land, which much of the world relies on for drinking water, and their salinity is low enough for them to be turned into potable water, Dr Post says.

"There are two ways to access this water -- build a platform out at sea and drill into the seabed, or drill from the mainland or islands close to the aquifers."

While offshore drilling can be very costly, Dr Post says this source of freshwater should be assessed and considered in terms of cost, sustainability and environmental impact against other water sources such as desalination, or even building large new dams on land.

"Freshwater under the seabed is much less salty than seawater," Dr Post says. "This means it can be converted to drinking water with less energy than seawater desalination, and it would also leave us with a lot less hyper-saline water.

"Freshwater on our planet is increasingly under stress and strain so the discovery of significant new stores off the coast is very exciting. It means that more options can be considered to help reduce the impact of droughts and continental water shortages."

But while nations may now have new reserves of freshwater offshore, Dr Post says they will need to take care in how they manage the seabed: "For example, where low-salinity groundwater below the sea is likely to exist, we should take care to not contaminate it.

"Sometimes boreholes are drilled into the aquifers for oil and gas exploration or production, or aquifers are targeted for carbon dioxide disposal. These activities can threaten the quality of the water."

Dr Post also warns that these water reserves are non-renewable: "We should use them carefully -- once gone, they won't be replenished until the sea level drops again, which is not likely to happen for a very long time."

The study, "Offshore fresh groundwater reserves as a global phenomenon" by Vincent E.A. Post, Jacobus Groen, Henk Kooi, Mark Person, Shemin Ge and W. Mike Edmunds, is published in the latest issue of Nature.

The National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training is an Australian Government initiative, supported by the Australian Research Council and the National Water Commission.

International gene therapy trial for 'bubble boy' disease shows promising early results

International gene therapy trial for 'bubble boy' disease shows promising early results

Eight of the nine boys registered to date in the new trial are alive and well, with functioning immune systems and free of infections associated with SCID-X1, between nine and 36 months following treatment, according to Sung-Yun Pai, MD, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist from Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. She presented the findings at the 55th annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology on behalf of the Transatlantic Gene Therapy Consortium (TAGTC). The investigators continue to monitor the children for signs of treatment-associated leukemia, which developed three to five years post-treatment in the prior trial. They point to surrogate biological markers that give them hope the viral vector used to deliver the new treatment is safe.

"These results show that the new vector appears to retain efficacy and, at least in preliminary studies, may be safer," said David A. Williams, MD, a leader of Dana-Farber/Boston Children's, who is chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Boston Children's Hospital, associate chair of pediatric oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and principal investigator for the gene therapy trial's U.S. sites.

Of the eight patients, seven are actively producing T cells, which are critical components of a healthy immune system. Six of these seven have met the trial's primary endpoint: a T-cell count greater than 300 cells per microliter of blood and T-cell proliferation in response to stimulation with phytohemagglutinin. The one patient among the seven who is producing T cells but has not yet achieved 300 cells/microliter will receive a second round of gene therapy next month.

The eighth surviving patient underwent a cord blood stem cell transplant after the gene therapy treatment failed to stimulate T-cell production. The lone fatality was caused by an overwhelming adenovirus infection present at the time the child entered the trial.

At the heart of the trial is a self-inactivating vector used to ferry the gene for the IL-2 receptor gamma subunit (IL2RG) into a patient's hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells. Once the gene is inserted, the cells are returned to the patient. IL2RG fuels the development and growth of immune cells and is a key component of normal immune system development. In children born with SCID-X1, the gene carries a mutation that renders it inactive.

The viral vector used in the study is a modified gammaretrovirus, a member of a family of viruses able to insert genetic cargo into the genome of mammalian cells and drive expression of the inserted genes. The vector has been engineered to avoid the leukemia that halted the previous SCID-X1 gene therapy effort.

Analyses of T cells from the participants in the current trial suggest that the new vector avoided genomic sites known to contribute to leukemia development. The study team will continue to keep a close eye on the patients for any signs of abnormal T-cell growth.

"Our preliminary data suggest that this new vector approach appears to be as effective as the previous vector, and may avoid the long-term risk of leukemia," said Pai. "We are closely monitoring the patients to evaluate their long-term risks, but the excellent responses we have seen thus far give us hope."

"This study represents a unique approach to international collaboration by leading pediatric researchers to quickly address the previous adverse events caused by gammaretrovirus-based vectors," Williams said. "Working together, this group of scientists did the basic studies needed to develop and test a new vector, guide the new trial through a complicated regulatory review process and begin quickly enrolling patients."

The study's U.S. sites are supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (grant number U01AI087628) and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's Product Assistance for Cellular Therapies Program.

Gene expression changes with meditation

Gene expression changes with meditation

A new study by researchers in Wisconsin, Spain, and France reports the first evidence of specific molecular changes in the body following a period of mindfulness meditation.

The study investigated the effects of a day of intensive mindfulness practice in a group of experienced meditators, compared to a group of untrained control subjects who engaged in quiet non-meditative activities. After eight hours of mindfulness practice, the meditators showed a range of genetic and molecular differences, including altered levels of gene-regulating machinery and reduced levels of pro-inflammatory genes, which in turn correlated with faster physical recovery from a stressful situation.

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that shows rapid alterations in gene expression within subjects associated with mindfulness meditation practice," says study author Richard J. Davidson, founder of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds and the William James and Vilas Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"Most interestingly, the changes were observed in genes that are the current targets of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs," says Perla Kaliman, first author of the article and a researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona, Spain (IIBB-CSIC-IDIBAPS), where the molecular analyses were conducted.

The study was published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Mindfulness-based trainings have shown beneficial effects on inflammatory disorders in prior clinical studies and are endorsed by the American Heart Association as a preventative intervention. The new results provide a possible biological mechanism for therapeutic effects.

The results show a down-regulation of genes that have been implicated in inflammation. The affected genes include the pro-inflammatory genes RIPK2 and COX2 as well as several histone deacetylase (HDAC) genes, which regulate the activity of other genes epigenetically by removing a type of chemical tag. What's more, the extent to which some of those genes were downregulated was associated with faster cortisol recovery to a social stress test involving an impromptu speech and tasks requiring mental calculations performed in front of an audience and video camera.

Perhaps surprisingly, the researchers say, there was no difference in the tested genes between the two groups of people at the start of the study. The observed effects were seen only in the meditators following mindfulness practice. In addition, several other DNA-modifying genes showed no differences between groups, suggesting that the mindfulness practice specifically affected certain regulatory pathways.

However, it is important to note that the study was not designed to distinguish any effects of long-term meditation training from those of a single day of practice. Instead, the key result is that meditators experienced genetic changes following mindfulness practice that were not seen in the non-meditating group after other quiet activities -- an outcome providing proof of principle that mindfulness practice can lead to epigenetic alterations of the genome.

Previous studies in rodents and in people have shown dynamic epigenetic responses to physical stimuli such as stress, diet, or exercise within just a few hours.

"Our genes are quite dynamic in their expression and these results suggest that the calmness of our mind can actually have a potential influence on their expression," Davidson says.

"The regulation of HDACs and inflammatory pathways may represent some of the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic potential of mindfulness-based interventions," Kaliman says. "Our findings set the foundation for future studies to further assess meditation strategies for the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions."

Study funding came from National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (grant number P01-AT004952) and grants from the Fetzer Institute, the John Templeton Foundation, and an anonymous donor to Davidson. The study was conducted at the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the UW-Madison Waisman Center.

Viewpoints Energy harvesting meets Raspberry Pi

Viewpoints Energy harvesting meets Raspberry Pi

2013/12/06

Front_of_Raspberry_PiAt first glance the Raspberry Pi looks like a simple programming board, not bigger than a credit card, with some ports. At second glance, it is exactly what it looks like.

But this very simplicity resulted in an unparalleled success with approximately 1,000,000 boards sold in the first year. If each Pi is stacked end-to-end, it would reach the length of 10,140 double-decker buses.

The Pi’s special feature is its combined flexibility and performance. Due to its many ports, it can connect to a large number of external devices used in our daily life, such as USB peripherals, HDMI for TVs or monitors, SD memory cards, Ethernet for all Internet-based connections or audio and video streaming. And it fits in a pocket.

A strong community of electronic and computing enthusiasts develop several Pi-based applications. One of these is home automation.

With its multi-connectivity and powerful processing options, the Raspberry Pi is the perfect platform for a low-cost smart home gateway which controls energy harvesting wireless sensors. This can be realised in a few steps.

Batteryless sensors and switches are ideal to get started with home automation. The devices are powered by an electro-dynamic energy converter which uses mechanical motion, or a miniaturised solar module which generates energy from light. Combining a thermoelectric converter with a DC/DC converter taps heat as an energy source. The radio protocol uses sub 1 GHz frequency bands, wireless signals are just 0.7 milliseconds in duration and are transmitted multiple times for redundancy.

To transform the Raspberry Pi into a smart home server integrating energy harvesting wireless solutions, the following accessories are needed: power supply (~1A) with micro USB plug, HDMI cable, SD card (e.g. 4GB), Ethernet cable or USB WLAN stick and an EnOcean Pi board. As a first step, Raspian wheezy image (Debian Linux for Raspberry Pi) needs to be installed on the SD card.

This is available for download at the raspberrypi.org website. After plugging the SD card to the Pi board and its configuration, EnOcean Pi needs to be connected on the Raspberry Pi’s top.

As default, the serial port of the GPIO interface is used for console debug outputs. In order to use this port for EnOcean Pi, this feature has to be disabled first. In a next step, the connection can be tested with raw data from EnOcean Pi by using hexdump.

For this, EnOcean Pi provides a serial stream of EnOcean radio telegrams according to ESP3 protocol (EnOcean Serial Protocol 3.0). The protocol describes the serial communication between a host and energy harvesting wireless receivers.

For remote control via TTY (e.g. PuTTY) or HTML server connections, the IP address of Raspberry Pi is needed. Users can get the allocated IP address (e.g. by DHCP server) by typing in the command: “ifconfig”. After this, developers can start with the installation of a building automation server based on GPL software (General Public License) such as FHEM or openHAB. Instructions can be found on the according websites.

The EnOcean Pi accessory is supplied with free to download EnOcean Link Trial version middleware. It decodes and encodes data communication according to the EnOcean profile standard and executes device connection. The trial version offers a selection of application profiles as well as instructions, for testing the basic functionality of the software.

With these components, users now can start to use the Raspberry Pi-based home automation server to automate common tasks like switching lamps, scene illuminations or pulling blinds, measure and visualise power consumption, temperature and humidity.

EnOcean Pi serves as a gateway controller to batteryless wireless applications. This could be a solar-powered radio sensor (e.g. STM 330 temperature sensor or STM 320 reed contact sensor) which periodically sends values to be interpreted and displayed via the web interface. With the duo of Raspberry Pi and EnOcean Pi, developers can open up the world to energy harvesting wireless control in a few steps.

Growing giants: Huge grains of copper promote better graphene growth

Growing giants: Huge grains of copper promote better graphene growth

Now a research team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colo., may help bring graphene's promise closer to reality. While searching for an ideal growth platform for the material, investigators developed a promising new recipe for a graphene substrate: a thin film of copper with massive crystalline grains. The team's findings appear in the journal AIP Advances, which is produced by AIP Publishing.

The key advance is the grain size of the copper substrate. The large grains are several centimeters in size -- lunkers by microelectronics standards -- but their relative bulk enables them to survive the high temperatures needed for graphene growth, explained NIST researcher Mark Keller.

The inability of most copper films to survive this stage of graphene growth "has been one problem preventing wafer-scale production of graphene devices," Keller said.

Thin films are an essential component of many electronic, optical, and medical technologies, but the grains in these films are typically smaller than one micrometer. To fabricate the new copper surface, whose grains are about 10,000 times larger, the researchers came up with a two-step process.

First, they deposited copper onto a sapphire wafer held slightly above room temperature. Second, they added the transformative step of annealing, or heat-treating, the film at a much higher temperature, near the melting point of copper. To demonstrate the viability of their giant-grained film, the researchers successfully grew graphene grains 0.2 millimeters in diameter on the new copper surface.

Business US moves to end patent abuse

Business US moves to end patent abuse

2013/12/06

Us_senate_sealPatent trolls could have their wings clipped if the US Senate follows the House of Representatives in passing a Bill to make it more difficult for patent trolls to sue for infringement.

The Bill puts more of an onus on the patent-holder to describe their invention and how the patent on it has been infringed, and reduces the amount of information required from the alleged infringer.

The Bill was supported by Google, Cisco, Microsoft and other big companies who say that patent litigation is becoming an “expensive distraction”.

The argument on the other side is that big companies routinely ignore patents, stealing IP to use in their products and not taking a licence to use it.

Business 244 LTE deployments.

Business 244 LTE deployments.

2013/12/06

244 operators have commercially launched LTE services in 92 countries, says the GSA.

98 LTE networks have been commercially launched so far in 2013.

499 operators are investing in LTE in 143 countries – made up of 448 firm operator commitments to build LTE networks in 134 countries, plus 51 additional operators engaged in various trials, studies, etc. in a further 9 countries.

From amongst the committed operators, 244 have commercially launched services, which is 78% more than a year ago.

GSA forecasts there will be 260 LTE networks in commercial service by the end of this year.

The majority of LTE operators have deployed the FDD mode of the standard. The most widely used band in network deployments continues to be 1800 MHz which is used in over 44% of commercially launched LTE networks. 108 operators worldwide have launched LTE1800 (band 3) systems, 157% more than a year ago, in 58 countries, either as a single band system, or as part of a multi-band deployment.

1800 MHz spectrum is typically refarmed from its original use for 2G/GSM, facilitated by technology-neutral licensing policies.

As 1800 MHz is the prime band for LTE deployments worldwide, it will greatly assist international roaming for mobile broadband. Mobile licences for 1800 MHz have bee n awarded to 350+ operators in nearly 150 countries.

The number of LTE1800 terminals has tripled in each of the past 2 years. One third of all announced LTE user devices can operate in 1800 MHz band 3 spectrum. LTE1800 is a mature, mainstream technology.

The next most popular contiguous bands are 2.6 GHz (band 7) as used in 29% of networks in commercial service today, followed by 800 MHz (band 20) in 12% of networks, and AWS (band 4) in 8% of networks.

Interest in the TDD mode continues to be strengthening globally ahead of the large-scale commercial deployments in China. Worldwide, 25 LTE TDD (TD-LTE) systems are commercially launched in 20 countries, of which 12 are deployed in combined LTE FDD & TDD operations.

Voice service has moved up the agenda for many LTE operators as network coverage has improved and as the penetration and usage of LTE-capable smartphones has increased.

VoLTE services have been launched by operators in Asia, Europe, and North America and several more operators have committed to VoLTE deployments and launches over the next few months.

Sensors Hall effect current sensor aims at electric vehicles

2013/12/06

11dec13MelexisMLX91208Melexis has released a fast Hall-effect current sensor for electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and solar generation.

Response time is 3µs, for dc and ac measurements up to 200kHz, and transfer characteristics are adjustable for sensitivity, gain and offset through control parameters stored on the built-in EEPROM.

There are two versions: MLX91208CAL for low magnetic fields (100-700mV/mT) and MLX91208CAH for medium fields (50-300mV/mT). Operating range is -40 to +150°C, with typical sensitivity drift of +/-150ppm/°C. http://www.melexis.com/MLX91208

11dec13MelexisShield 300“Sensitivity stems from the integrated magnetic concentrator layer deposited onto the semiconductor die,” said the firm. “Current sensing systems based on the series are expected to exhibit accuracy exceeding +/-0.5% at room temperature or +/-2% at the extremes of the specified temperature range.”

Output is described by Melexis as “fast analogue, 12bit resolution DAC”.

To save a pin, calibration is done using the company’s ‘programming through connector’ protocol in which the supply voltage is modulated.

Packaging is standard SO-8 package, and a 48bit ID number is stored inside.

Currently, access to the data sheet is restricted.
