Intersil colour sensor

Intersil colour sensor

Intersil has announced a light-in digital-out colour photometric chip.

Called ISL29125, and measures only 1.65×1.65mm, it is intended to be used alongside displays, monitoring ambient light so the perceived display colour and intensity can be maintained.

“Specifically, in OLED display TV applications, it can be used to adjust the blue organic material ageing profile to maintain consistent contrast and brightness throughout the life of the display,” said the firm.

Dynamic range is 5.7mlux to 10klux, in two ranges: 0.0057 to 375lux, and 0.152 to 10,000 lux, measured through an internal integrating 16bit ADC operating at 100ms/colour.

Part-to-part variation of RGB output is said to be less than +/-10%

Operating is over -40 to +85°C from 2.25V to 3.63V, using 85uA, or 0.5uA when shut down.

The digital interface is I2C, needing pull-ups to between 1.7 and 3.63V.

There is an evaluation board and a presentation on the chip.

Research Phosphorene: graphene with a bandgap

Research Phosphorene: graphene with a bandgap

2014/01/27

US and Chinese scientist have made transistors from a graphene-like substance called black phosphorus, which is being dubbed phosphorene in its few-layer form.

Just like graphene, phosphorus can form a flat sheet molecule. Although up-close it is heavily corrugated while graphene is flat – the difference being a result of phosphorus’ three covalent bonds and carbon’s four.

“The three bonds take up all three valence electrons of phosphorus so, unlike graphene, monolayer black phosphorus is a semiconductor,” said the Chinese team in its paper ‘Black Phosphorus Field-effect Transistors‘, published on arxiv.org. “For few-layer phosphorene, interlayer interactions reduce the band gap for each layer added, and eventually reach ~0.3eV for bulk black phosphorus.”

In the bulk form, layers are held together by Van der Waals – also like graphene. For research, flakes of both materials can be removed from lumps of the raw material using stick tape.

The Chinese team, from Fudan University, Shanghai, and University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, made back-gate transitors by putting flakes on an oxide-coated silicon wafer, then depositing metal source and drain contacts on the flake.

With a 5nm channel on a 7.5nm thick flake, and on/off current ratio of around 105 was measured.

“The measured drain current modulation is four orders of magnitude larger than that in graphene due to its [graphene's] lack of bandgap,” said the team in its paper.

The maximum ratio could be higher, but limitations in the wafer oxide layer prevented the transistors from being pushed into saturation.

Phosphorene has p-type tendencies. Mobility was thickness dependent, and hole mobility peaked around 1,000cm2/Vs on 10nm thick flakes.

The US team also found a direct bandgap, describing a mobility hole mobility of 286cm2/Vs and on/off ratio up to 104 from 1µm channel fets in a paper ‘Phosphorene: A New 2D Material with High Carrier Mobility‘, also published on arxiv.org.

Molybdenum disulphide is another material that forms 2D structures with graphene-like behaviour, this time exhibiting n-type behaviour.

Also described in its paper, the US team, from Purdue University and Michigan State University, went on to make a CMOS inverter from 2D materials – phosphorene for PMOS and MoS2 for NMOS transistors, using top-gate structures with Al2O3 high-k gate dielectric.

Business LTE booming, says GSA

Business LTE booming, says GSA

2014/01/27

132 manufacturers have announced 1,371 LTE-enabled user devices, says the GSA.

705 LTE user devices were launched in the past year, representing 106% annual growth.

The number of manufacturers increased by 52% in the same period.

Smartphones represented 39% of all LTE device types.

99% of LTE smartphones are multimode, capable of operating on 3G networks (i.e. HSPA/HSPA+ or EV-DO or TD-SCDMA technologies). 33% of LTE phones can operate on 42 Mbps DC-HSPA+ systems.

The report covers LTE FDD and/or TDD devices. The majority of terminals are designed for operation in the FDD mode.

Importantly, 304 products can operate in the LTE TDD (TD-LTE) mode, which is 180 more than a year ago.

The largest LTE device ecosystems are:

FDD bands:

2600 MHz band 7 = 493 devices
1800 MHz band 3 = 483 devices
2100 MHz band 1 = 354 devices
800 MHz band 20 = 335 devices
700 MHz bands 12, 17 = 308 devices
AWS band 4 = 303 devices
700 MHz band 13 = 261 devices
850 MHz band 5 = 243 devices
900 MHz band 8 = 205 devices
1900 MHz band 2 = 149 devices
1900 MHz band 25 = 92 devices

TDD bands:

2600 MHz band 38 = 215 devices
2300 MHz band 40 = 207 devices
2600 MHz band 41 = 81 devices
1900 MHz band 39 = 80 devices
3500 MHz bands 42, 43 = 15 devices
(totals include carrier and operator variants)

“Over half of the latest LTE device announcements included support for 1800 MHz (Band 3), which is the most commonly used spectrum globally in LTE network deployments,” says
Alan Hadden, President of the GSA, “very soon 1800 MHz will have the largest device ecosystem. Support for LTE TDD (TD-LTE) devices has also significantly strengthened.”

Operators in at least 25 countries have commercially launched networks that support Category 4 user devices, which have a peak downlink rate up to 150 Mbps. A total of 142 user devices support Category 4.

For the first time GSA provides details about VoLTE-capable devices. Operators have generally launched or are planning to introduce HD voice as the first service offer enabled by VoLTE on their LTE networks. The report confirmed that 42 VoLTE phones, including carrier and frequency variants, have been launched.

GSA recently confirmed that 263 LTE networks have commercially launched in 93 countries (Evolution to LTE report, January 15, 2014). More than 10% of commercial LTE networks have deployed the LTE TDD mode. 28 LTE TDD systems are commercially launched in 21 countries, including 13 operators who use FDD and TDD modes in their operations.

GSA forecasts that there will be at least 350 LTE networks in commercial service by end 2014. Regular updates on market developments will be provided throughout the year.

Business Kroes launches European start-up accelerator

Business Kroes launches European start-up accelerator

2014/01/27

EC vp Neelie Kroes launched a new start-up accelerator at Davos.

Called the Startup Europe Partnership, the founding organisations are: Telefonica, Orange, BBVA, European Investment Bank, Cambridge University, IE Business School, Humboldt University, the Lisbon Council, Nesta and Mind the Bridge Foundation.

“Europe needs thriving startups and global internet companies to become a global growth centre again,” Kroes said.

The Startup Europe Partnership will help start-ups break through their national glass ceiling into global maturity.

Its secretariat will be led by the Mind the Bridge Foundation, a non-profit corporation and Nesta, the UK’s innovation foundation.

“Politicians don’t create jobs, entrepreneurs do,” said Kroes, “we’re going to support that mindset and push European start-ups beyond their comfort zone. And then we’re going to get out of the way. Sometimes the best thing a political leader can do is get out of the way.”

The European Digital Forum will give entrepreneurs a voice in policy debates and aims to become Europe’s leading think tank and policy network on digital entrepreneurship. It will also produce an annual Digital Economy Index to measure how friendly Europe is to the mind-set required to succeed in the digital era. Its secretariat will be led by the Lisbon Council in collaboration with Nesta.

The Startup Partnership and Digital Forum are the Commission’s first concrete actions to deliver new business conditions in Europe following delivery of a Manifesto by the Startup Europe Leaders Club to Europe’s Prime Ministers and Presidents in October 2013 (IP/13/989).

Startup Europe is the umbrella term for six initiatives under the Commission’s Digital Agenda: The Accelerator Assembly, the European Crowdfunding Network, The Web Investors Forum, the Leaders Club, the Startup Europe Partnership

The Startup Europe Partnership (SEP) will build bridges between Europe’s startup, corporate and investment communities to help EU startups raise funds and beat language barriers to reach maturity as global champions.

Psychologists document the age our earliest memories fade

Psychologists document the age our earliest memories fade

Jan. 24, 2014 — Although infants use their memories to learn new information, few adults can remember events in their lives that happened prior to the age of three. Psychologists at Emory University have now documented that age seven is when these earliest memories tend to fade into oblivion, a phenomenon known as "childhood amnesia."

Share This:

The journal Memory published the research, which involved interviewing children about past events in their lives, starting at age three. Different subsets of the group of children were then tested for recall of these events at ages five, six, seven, eight and nine.

"Our study is the first empirical demonstration of the onset of childhood amnesia," says Emory psychologist Patricia Bauer, who led the study. "We actually recorded the memories of children, and then we followed them into the future to track when they forgot these memories."

The study's co-author is Marina Larkina, a manager of research projects for Emory's Department of Psychology.

The Bauer Memory Development Lab focuses on how episodic, or autobiographical memory, changes through childhood and early adulthood.

"Knowing how autobiographical memory develops is critically important to understanding ourselves as psychic beings," Bauer says. "Remembering yourself in the past is how you know who you are today."

Scientists have long known, based on interviews with adults, that most people's earliest memories only go back to about age 3. Sigmund Freud coined the term "childhood amnesia" to describe this loss of memory from the infant years. Using his psychoanalytic theory, Freud made the controversial proposal that people were repressing their earliest memories due to their inappropriate sexual nature.

In recent years, however, growing evidence indicates that, while infants use memory to learn language and make sense of the world around them, they do not yet have the sophisticated neural architecture needed to form and hold onto more complex forms of memory.

Instead of relying on interviews with adults, as previous studies of childhood amnesia have done, the Emory researchers wanted to document early autobiographical memory formation, as well as the age of forgetting these memories.

The experiment began by recording 83 children at the age of three, while their mothers or fathers asked them about six events that the children had experienced in recent months, such as a trip to the zoo or a birthday party.

"We asked the parents to speak as they normally would to their children," Bauer says.

She gives a hypothetical example: "The mother might ask, 'Remember when we went to Chuck E. Cheese's for your birthday party?' She might add, 'You had pizza, didn't you?'"

The child might start recounting details of the Chuck E. Cheese experience or divert the conversation by saying something like, "Zoo!"

Some mothers might keep asking about the pizza, while another mother might say, "Okay, we went to the zoo, too. Tell me about that."

Parents who followed a child's lead in these conversations tended to elicit richer memories from their three-year-olds, Bauer says. "This approach also related to the children having a better memory of the event at a later age."

After recording these base memories, the researchers followed up with the children years later, asking them to recall the events that they recounted at age three. The study subjects were divided into five different groups, and each group of children returned only once to participate in the experiment, from the ages of five to nine.

While the children between the ages of five and seven could recall 63 to 72 percent of the events, the children who were eight and nine years old remembered only about 35 percent of the events.

"One surprising finding was that, although the five-and-six year-old children remembered a higher percentage of the events, their narratives of these events were less complete," Bauer says. "The older children remembered fewer events, but the ones they remembered had more detail."

Some reasons for this difference may be that memories that stick around longer may have richer detail associated with them and increasing language skills enable an older child to better elaborate the memory, further cementing it in their minds, Bauer says.

Young children tend to forget events more rapidly than adults do because they lack the strong neural processes required to bring together all the pieces of information that go into a complex autobiographical memory, she explains. "You have to learn to use a calendar and understand the days of the week and the seasons. You need to encode information about the physical location of the event. And you need development of a sense of self, an understanding that your perspective is different from that of someone else."

She uses an analogy of pasta draining in a colander to explain the difference between early childhood and adult memories.

"Memories are like orzo," she says, referring to the rice-grained-sized pasta, "little bits and pieces of neural encoding."

Young children's brains are like colanders with large holes trying to retain these little pieces of memory. "As the water rushes out, so do many of the grains of orzo," Bauer says. "Adults, however, use a fine net instead of a colander for a screen."

Now that Bauer has documented the onset of childhood amnesia, she hopes to hone in on the age that people acquire an adult memory system, which she believes is between the age of nine and the college years.

"We'd like to know more about when we trade in our colanders for a net," she says. "Between the ages of 9 and 18 is largely a no-man's land of our knowledge of how memory forms."

Interplanetary dust particles could deliver water and organics to jump-start life on Earth

Interplanetary dust particles could deliver water and organics to jump-start life on Earth

Interplanetary dust, dust that has come from comets, asteroids, and leftover debris from the birth of the solar system, continually rains down on Earth and other Solar System bodies. These particles are bombarded by solar wind, predominately hydrogen ions. This ion bombardment knocks the atoms out of order in the silicate mineral crystal and leaves behind oxygen that is more available to react with hydrogen, for example, to create water molecules.

"It is a thrilling possibility that this influx of dust has acted as a continuous rainfall of little reaction vessels containing both the water and organics needed for the eventual origin of life on Earth and possibly Mars," said Hope Ishii, new Associate Researcher in the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP) at UHM SOEST and co-author of the study. This mechanism of delivering both water and organics simultaneously would also work for exoplanets, worlds that orbit other stars. These raw ingredients of dust and hydrogen ions from their parent star would allow the process to happen in almost any planetary system.

Implications of this work are potentially huge: Airless bodies in space such as asteroids and the Moon, with ubiquitous silicate minerals, are constantly being exposed to solar wind irradiation that can generate water. In fact, this mechanism of water formation would help explain remotely sensed data of the Moon, which discovered OH and preliminary water, and possibly explains the source of water ice in permanently shadowed regions of the Moon.

"Perhaps more exciting," said Ishii, "interplanetary dust, especially dust from primitive asteroids and comets, has long been known to carry organic carbon species that survive entering the Earth's atmosphere, and we have now demonstrated that it also carries solar-wind-generated water. So we have shown for the first time that water and organics can be delivered together."

It has been known since the Apollo-era, when astronauts brought back rocks and soil from the Moon, that solar wind causes the chemical makeup of the dust's surface layer to change. Hence, the idea that solar wind irradiation might produce water-species has been around since then, but whether it actually does produce water has been debated. The reasons for the uncertainty are that the amount of water produced is small and it is localized in very thin rims on the surfaces of silicate minerals so that older analytical techniques were unable to confirm the presence of water.

Using a state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope, the scientists have now actually detected water produced by solar-wind irradiation in the space-weathered rims on silicate minerals in interplanetary dust particles. Futher, on the bases of laboratory-irradiated minerals that have similar amorphous rims, they were able to conclude that the water forms from the interaction of solar wind hydrogen ions (H+) with oxygen in the silicate mineral grains.

This recent work does not suggest how much water may have been delivered to Earth in this manner from IDPs.

"In no way do we suggest that it was sufficient to form oceans, for example," said Ishii. "However, the relevance of our work is not the origin of the Earth's oceans but that we have shown continuous, co-delivery of water and organics intimately intermixed."

In future work, the scientists will attempt to estimate water abundances delivered to Earth by IDPs. Further, they will explore in more detail what other organic (carbon-based) and inorganic species are present in the water in the vesicles in interplanetary dust rims.

Rainforests in Far East shaped by humans for the last 11,000 years

Rainforests in Far East shaped by humans for the last 11,000 years

The rain forests of Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Thailand and Vietnam were previously thought to have been largely unaffected by humans, but the latest research from Queen's Palaeoecologist Dr Chris Hunt suggests otherwise.

A major analysis of vegetation histories across the three islands and the SE Asian mainland has revealed a pattern of repeated disturbance of vegetation since the end of the last ice age approximately 11,000 years ago.

The research, which was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy, is being published in the Journal of Archaeological Science. It is the culmination of almost 15 years of field work by Dr Hunt, involving the collection of pollen samples across the region, and a major review of existing palaeoecology research, which was completed in partnership with Dr Ryan Rabett from Cambridge University.

Evidence of human activity in rainforests is extremely difficult to find and traditional archaeological methods of locating and excavating sites are extremely difficult in the dense forests. Pollen samples, however, are now unlocking some of the region's historical secrets.

Dr Hunt, who is Director of Research on Environmental Change at Queen's School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology, said: "It has long been believed that the rainforests of the Far East were virgin wildernesses, where human impact has been minimal. Our findings, however, indicate a history of disturbances to vegetation. While it could be tempting to blame these disturbances on climate change, that is not the case as they do not coincide with any known periods of climate change. Rather, these vegetation changes have been brought about by the actions of people.

"There is evidence that humans in the Kelabit Highlands of Borneo burned fires to clear the land for planting food-bearing plants. Pollen samples from around 6,500 years ago contain abundant charcoal, indicating the occurrence of fire. However, while naturally occurring or accidental fires would usually be followed by specific weeds and trees that flourish in charred ground, we found evidence that this particular fire was followed by the growth of fruit trees. This indicates that the people who inhabited the land intentionally cleared it of forest vegetation and planted sources of food in its place.

"One of the major indicators of human action in the rainforest is the sheer prevalence of fast-growing 'weed' trees such as Macaranga, Celtis and Trema. Modern ecological studies show that they quickly follow burning and disturbance of forests in the region.

"Nearer to the Borneo coastline, the New Guinea Sago Palm first appeared over 10,000 years ago. This would have involved a voyage of more than 2,200km from its native New Guinea, and its arrival on the island is consistent with other known maritime voyages in the region at that time -- evidence that people imported the Sago seeds and planted them."

The findings have huge importance for ecological studies or rainforests as the historical role of people in managing the forest vegetation has rarely been considered. It could also have an impact on rainforest peoples fighting the advance of logging companies.

Dr Hunt continued: "Laws in several countries in South East Asia do not recognise the rights of indigenous forest dwellers on the grounds that they are nomads who leave no permanent mark on the landscape. Given that we can now demonstrate their active management of the forests for more than 11,000 years, these people have a new argument in their case against eviction."

40 percent of parents learn how to use technology from their children

40 percent of parents learn how to use technology from their children

Jan. 24, 2014 — Just how are adults learning to use technology? Chances are if you are a parent, your child is teaching you. A recent paper published in the Journal of Communication found that between 30%-40% of parents were taught how to use the computer and Internet from their children.

Share This:

Teresa Correa, University Diego Portales (in Santiago, Chile), conducted in-depth interviews with 14 parent/child sets and surveyed 242 parent/child sets. She found that youth influence their parents in all technologies studied (computer, mobile Internet, social networking) up to 40% of the time. The children's scores were higher compared to parents, showing that parents don't necessarily recognize the influence. Parent's also learned how to use technologies by self-experimentation.

This bottom-up influence process was more likely to occur with mothers and lower socioeconomic families. Similar to what happens among low-income immigrant families, where the children act as language and culture links between the family and the new environment. Digital media represents a new environment for lower socioeconomic families, and the children from poorer families were more likely to receive input about technology from school and friends. This spills over and, in turn, the children teach their parents.

Past studies have connected younger family members' influence of older family members with the computer and Internet. Those used qualitative methods and have not explored the extent to which this process occurs and what factors play a role, like Correa's study.

"The fact that this bottom-up technology transmission occurs more frequently among women and lower-SES families has important implications," said Correa. "Women and poor people usually lag behind in the adoption and usage of technology. Many times, they do not have the means to acquire new technologies but, most importantly, they are less likely to have the knowledge, skills, perceived competence, and positive attitudes toward digital media. These results suggest that schools in lower-income areas should be especially considered in government or foundation-led intervention programs that promote usage of digital media."

Mars could have supported life: Ten years on Mars leads to livable mud

Mars could have supported life: Ten years on Mars leads to livable mud

The findings were announced in a special 'Exploring Mars Habitability' edition of the journal Science released today to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Mars Opportunity Rover and its twin, Spirit, landing on the red planet.

CSIRO's Dr Paulo de Souza, who is on the science team led by Cornell University's Professor Steven Squyres, said a major focus on NASA's decade of research on Mars surface was whether the planet may ever have been habitable.

"While Mars is too cold now to have the liquid water needed for life, we've had evidence for past water activity on the planet from satellite images of valleys and analysis of rocks by the Rovers," Dr de Souza said.

"If there was ever life on Mars, then this would have been the mud for it to live in."

"But the water that once shaped those landscapes and minerals was as acidic as vinegar.

"Our latest research has found not only the earliest episode of water activity documented yet by the Opportunity Rover, but that the geochemistry of the 4 billion year old rocks indicates extensive deposits of past water that's among the freshest, most life-sustaining found so far anywhere on Mars.

"If there was ever life on Mars, then this would have been the mud for it to live in."

Dr de Souza is a Science Leader at CSIRO in micro-sensors and has worked with NASA since the Mars Exploration Rover Program began, having collaborated with NASA's research teams for many years.

Dr de Souza is very proud of the Opportunity Rover, a golf buggy-sized all-terrain vehicle also known as 'Oppy', whose tenth birthday is today.

"She's a brave little Rover and she's way past warranty," he said.

"Opportunity's Mars mission was expected to last just months but she's still going strong 10 years on with no signs of stopping. She's travelled 38km instead of the few hundred metres planned.

"Along the way, Oppy's collected invaluable information about Mars' surface with her high tech toolkit of rock scrapers, chemical sensors, and spectral analysers."

Oppy's been beaming a decade's worth of data back to space receiving stations on Earth, including the Canberra Deep Space Communication Centre outside Canberra at Tidbinbilla managed by CSIRO.

"Thanks to the Rovers, we now have a much richer knowledge of our nearest planet and where to focus our future search for microfossils, present water and other signs of life," Dr de Souza said.

Power Electric vehicle wireless charging gets on the road

Power Electric vehicle wireless charging gets on the road

2014/01/24

Futuristic home - electric MercedesI’m on a bus headed for Bletchley Park, but not to visit the UK’s second-world-war codebreaking centre, I’m just along for the ride.

That’s because I’m on an electric bus that is one of the first vehicles to use a revolutionary inductive charging technology. Its batteries charge wirelessly when the bus stops to pick up passengers. With no need to plug in to charge, it’s a breakthrough that should speed up the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EV).

Take the Electronics Weekly Salary Survey 2014 »

Charging an EV is a laborious process. The owner has to find a charging point, connect up their cable and leave the car for some hours. It’s inconvenient, and cables can easily get lost or damaged.

Wireless power transfer technology was developed decades ago, but low efficiency meant it was restricted to industrial settings, providing power for robotic vehicles and cranes, for example. That is finally changing.

The wireless system relies on the well-known principle of electromagnetic induction. A magnetic field generated by an alternating current in a primary coil induces a current in a nearby secondary coil. What is new is technology that allows for an energy-transfer efficiency of 90 per cent or higher.

Engineers John Boyes and Grant Covic at the University of Auckland in New Zealand worked out the optimal design for the shape of the coils to minimise energy losses. They also figured out how power can be transferred when the coils are misaligned – so it still functions even if you are terrible at parking. The magnetic field has to be controlled so it stays within a safe limit, otherwise metal carried by passengers, from coins to pacemakers, could heat up.

Two firms – IPT Technology of Efringen-Kirchen in Germany and Qualcomm Halo of London – have licensed the Auckland patents and are developing their own variants.

On 9 January, the UK city of Milton Keynes launched a full-scale electric bus service, plying a 24-kilometre route with eight buses running from the city centre to Bletchley, charged using IPT’s pads.

Two of the stops my bus arrives at have power coils embedded in the ground and covered by 3-metre-square toughened pads. Using markings on the road and kerb, the driver aligns the bus, with its pickup coil fitted underneath, over the pad to establish a magnetically coupled link. And that’s it: after some wireless authentication to identify the vehicle, the bus’s battery pack gets a 120-kilowatt charge for 10 minutes during a built-in timetable stop. The bus still uses diesel, too, but only for its heating system, says John Miles of London-based firm Arup, who is a consultant on the project.

IPT Technology’s wireless chargers also supply power to buses on two routes in Genoa and Turin in Italy. After successfully trialling a wirelessly charged Mercedes EV, the firm is planning to expand production of its devices for consumer EVs, says product manager Mathias Wechler.

Qualcomm Halo is developing 3-kilowatt chargers for the Renault Fluence, a four-door family-size car. They are just 25 centimetres square and 2.2 cm deep, with road pads that are 75 cm square and 3.3 cm deep. “In the next two to three years wireless charging will definitely become an option for EVs,” says director Joe Barrett.

In a test of the technology’s potential, Paul Drayson, a British racing driver and entrepreneur, last October set the world land-speed record for a lightweight EV in a racing car charged by one of Qualcomm Halo’s wireless pads. The company’s technology will also charge the safety cars in Formula-E – the electric version of Formula 1 which kicks off later this year.

“Charging without the faff of using a cable is a very significant driver of future electric car adoption,” says Drayson. Back on my bus, John Loughhead, who directs the UK Energy Research Centre in London, is optimistic. “It doesn’t remove all the barriers to widespread EV use. But it certainly chips away at some of them.”
